RTO Karnataka Driving License – Application, Documents, Status, Update

If you are a resident of Karnataka and if you have not yet obtained a driving license yet, now it is the time. The state follows certain rules and regulations that are followed strictly. Now earning a driving license in Karnataka is not a lengthy process as it was before.

To be able to drive a car or a motorbike is a skill to master. To drive in any country or state you need to be proficient in that. Types of Driving License in RTO Karnataka

In Karnataka, the license aspirants have to obtain the Learner’s License first and then obtain a Permanent Driving License in six months. You can get a slot for Permanent Driving License only after a month of getting the Learner’s License.

There are three types of Driving License granted by the Karnataka Government

  1. Driving License for the Motorcycles without Gear: This type of License is given to the candidates for driving motorcycles and two-wheelers without gears like scooters and mopeds. To apply for this license the candidates has to attain an age of 16 or above.
  2. Driving License for Light Weight Motorcycles: This license is valid for the vehicles such as the bikes and cars. To apply for this license the applicant has to attain an age of 18 or above.
  3. Driving License for Transport Vehicles: This license is for the transport vehicles such as the cabs, private service vehicles, trucks, and Lorries etc. The required age for applying this license is 20 or above.

Documents Required for the Driving License in RTO Karnataka

To obtain the driving license the candidates must submit the following documents to the concerned Regional Transport Office (RTO).

  • Four passport size photos of the applicant.
  • Medical Certificate in Form 1A and 1 given by any licensed Government doctor, if applicable.
  • Valid documents of the vehicle if you own a vehicle.
  • A dully filled licensed application which can be downloaded from the Karnataka Transport Department.
  • Valid Age Proof: SSLC Book, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar card etc.
  • Valid ID Proof: Any photo and signature bearing National Identity Cards such as the Voter ID, Passport, PAN Card or the Aadhaar Card.
  • Residence Proof: Ration Card Copy, Rental/lease agreement, Utility Bill etc.
  • Specified application fees.

How to Apply for a Driving License in RTO Karnataka

To apply for a Driving License in Karnataka, follow the below steps

  • Visit the nearest RTO Office and grab the application form from there.
  • Apply via a motor driving school or download one directly from www.rto.kar.nic.in
  • Then document verification takes place, where you need to show that following documents like Passport sized photographs, ID Proof, residence address proof etc.
  • After the documentation, a slot will be given for the preliminary test.
  • The test is meant for testing the driving the skills and how you are aware of the road rules and safety and the traffic laws.
  • Once you pass the preliminary test, you will be given a Learner’s License.
  • After the preliminary test and achieving the Learner’s License, the rest of the procedure is quite simple.
  • The validity of the Learner’s License is only for Six Months and you can apply for a Permanent Driving License only after a month.

How to Check the status of a Driving License in RTO Karnataka

The Driving License is sent to the applicant in less than 30 days after passing the test. If in case you haven’t received it in time then you can visit the nearest RTO Office and check the status. You can also check the driving license status online. For checking the status online, all you have to do is enter the required details in the relevant columns. The license can get canceled if you have unpaid challans or ignored the summons.

How to Make Corrections in Driving License Online

If an applicant who is having a driving license and wishes to make any sort of corrections like the misspell name, address etc. printed on a card then they need to forward an application along with the relevant documents with correct information.

  • Passport
  • Any latest utility bill
  • LIC Policy
  • Ration Card
  • Caste Certificate (ST/SC, Backward class or Minorities etc.)
  • Income Certificate issued by the Tahasildar.
  • Self-swearing affidavit of the applicant in front of an executive Magistrate or a First Class Judicial Magistrate or a Notary Public with correct details.
  • Proof of Lawful residential status in India. (For overseas applicants)

A required correction is filed and a fresh license will be given to you on the same day when issued in the RTO. And if you are applying in a different RTO, then the new license with the changed address will be sent in one month after the verification. The applicant also has to pay Rs 215 and must be present in person to be photographed by the Official.

How to change the Address for Driving License Online in RTO Karnataka

If the applicant wants to change the address that is printed on the card, then they need to forward a written application along with certain proofs, for the new residence:

  • Passport
  • Any latest utility bill
  • LIC Policy
  • Ration Card
  • Caste Certificate (ST/SC, Backward class or Minorities etc.)
  • Income Certificate issued by the Tahasildar.
  • Self-swearing affidavit of the applicant in front of an executive Magistrate or a First Class Judicial Magistrate or a Notary Public with correct details.
  • Proof of Lawful residential status in India. (For overseas applicants)
  • The change of address can be applied and a new driving license is given to the applicant on the same day in the RTA Office.
  • If applied in a different RTO, the new driving license with new address will be sent in one month after due verification.

Test Procedure for Driving License in RTO Karnataka

After obtaining the Learner’s License, you can apply for the practical driving test after one month. You can also choose a slot according to your comfort of giving the test. On the day, the inspector will scrutinize the documents before you go for a test. The transport department does not provide any vehicles, you have to get your own vehicle. If you are trained in a motor vehicle driving school then that will be taken care by the school.

Four Wheeler Test: Firstly, the applicant has to give a Ground Test, which is basically driving along the marked “H” Without touching the poles planted on the edges. This is to test the control ability, reverse, shift gears, and focus and so on. Upon flunking this, you will be given another chance or date to retake the test again. Once you clear the ground test, you will be cleared for the road test as well. This will be the final stage. Here the examiner will accompany you and will check your driving skills, adaptation of the vehicle and how well you are with the traffic rules and regulations.

Two-Wheeler and Three-Wheeler Test: In this case also, the ground test comes first. You will have to ride a bike or an auto-rickshaw in a bordered “Figure of Eight” without touching the poles that are planted at the different corners. This shows how comfortable you are with the vehicle, with the shifting of the gears and bending corners and so on. After clearing this, you will be redirected to the road test, where you have to ride for a certain distance on the road complying with the rules and the regulations.

The inspector of the Motor Vehicles will take the test of your capability to drive in accordance with the guidelines listed under the Rule 15 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rule (1989). If he is satisfied with your driving skills, then he will pass the recommendations to the RTO Office and you will soon receive your driving License. If the applicant is failed to clear the test then he/she can appear the test after 7 days by paying a small fee of Rs 50.

Renewal of the Driving License in RTO Karnataka

The Driving License is issued with a validity of 20 years up to the age of 20 years. And if you cross the age of 50, then you have to renew your License after every 3-5 years in Karnataka. You can request for a renewal at least 20 years before it is expired or within a month after expiry.

First, you need to collect a renewal form from the RTO, where you have issued your License earlier. Submit the filled form CMV 9 along with the medical certificate I form CMV 1/1A along with three passport sized photographs and Original DL.

A renewal fee of Rs 300 is paid for the new card and you will receive the card the same day itself.

How to Apply for a Duplicate Driving License in RTO Karnataka

If in case you’re driving license is lost or damaged, you need to apply for a Duplicate Driving License. You will have to submit an LLD Form duly filled to the nearest RTO Office. The steps mentioned below will guide you how to obtain a Duplicate Driving License in Karnataka:

  • The applicant has to fill the LLD KMV-1 Form correctly and submit it to the Same RTO which has approved or renewed the License.
  • Along with the LLD Form, you have to give at least three copies of the Passport size photos and the fee mentioned in the KMV Guidebook.
  • If your application for the Duplicate Driving License is made in Form 7, then you have to pay a small fee of Rs 40.
  • You will also have to present a duplicate copy of your lost license, otherwise, it will be difficult for the concerned official to extract your details. Doing this will speed up the process and make it easier.

How to Get International Driving License in RTO Karnataka

If you are planning to apply for an International Driving License, then follow the below guidelines:

  • Collect the Form CMV 4-A from the nearest RTO Office or download it from the website.
  • A charge of Rs 500 is charged for the International Driving Permit. Submit the money to the RTO cashier. You can also make the payment online.
  • Show your Original Valid Driving License, Visa, Passport and Air Ticket and submit the copies in the Office.
  • A Medical Certificate and a fitness certificate in form CMV1 and CMV1A are given with a dully filled application along with three latest passports sized photographs.
  • The applicant must be an Indian Citizen and has to be present in the office.
  • If the driving license is given within 90 days, then the applicant has to go for a re-test.
  • The address that is given in the License must be under the RTO Dominion.
  • The International Driving Permit has a validity of 12 months or until the driving license expires, whichever happens, earlier.

In today’s age, Driver’s License has become very essential in part of everyone’s life. It not only acts as a Driving License but also acts as an Identity proof. A driving license is an official document that states that a person can operate or is eligible to drive any type of motorized vehicles such as motorcycle, car, bike, truck or a bus on a public roadway. Types Of Driving License In Delhi

The Driving License in Delhi is categorised into two types: Permanent and Temporary.

  • Learner License: This is a test license that gives you the permission to learn and practice driving. This license is valid for six months, which is enough to gain all the driving skills and qualify the competency test. You are required to practice for a month before taking the practical.
  • Permanent License: The permanent license is applicable or is achieved if you clear the driving competency test. The driving competency test comprises of a ground test and a road test.

Delhi offers driving license for a range of vehicles types described below

  • Light Motor Transport Vehicle: This license is given to those who drive the commercial and transport vehicles such as cabs, jeeps, delivery vans, auto rickshaws etc.
  • Medium Goods Vehicles: This category includes vehicles like Trucks and Tempos for goods transportation.
  • Medium Passenger Vehicle: This includes vehicles like minivans, tempos for passengers.
  • Heavy Goods Vehicles: This includes vehicles such as trucks and large vans which are meant to transport goods.
  • Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicles: This category includes vehicles such as buses etc which are used for the commercial purpose and transportation of the passengers.
  • Non- Transport Vehicles: This license is applicable to the applicants who drive private vehicles, gear-less motorcycles like scooters and mopeds, and light motor vehicles such as cars.

Documents Required For Applying A Driving License In Delhi

The driving license must be made in Form No.4 accompanied by the following

  • A valid learner’s license which is permitted to you to learn driving on the ground/road. It will be specified for which vehicle are you applying for.
  • Fees as per the rules.
  • Proof of nationality/ citizenship (attested duplicate copies)
  • One latest passport size photo (the photo click should be less than six months )
  • A driving License in the Form No. 5 and 14 issued by the motor driving training school (Optional)

If you have a Learner’s License already, then fill in the Form No. 4 and submit at your Closest Transport Zonal Office in Delhi along with the papers or the documents specified above.

A driving test is conducted by the Official of the Inspector Rank from the Transport Department. The officer will test your driving aptitudes. They will not provide the vehicles, you will have to bring it of your own or arrange it from a Motor Driving School. If the test is done successfully, then your finger impression and photos will be taken aside from the necessary documents and application forms. How To Make Corrections In The Driving License In Delhi

If the applicants having a Driving License before wish to make any change in the name, date of birth or Pin code etc, printed or issued in Delhi. Then they can send a written application with the relevant documents with correct information. Make sure that the RTO must be the same , where you issued your original driving License. Once approved, you can collect your driving license with correct information on the same day itself. You will be charged a small fee for this.

Here the examiner will come along with you and check your driving skills, adaptation with the vehicle, how well you are in the practical implementation of the traffic rules and laws. If he is not happy with your driving, then the examiner will give you another date.

Two-Wheeler and Three-Wheeler Test: In this case also, the ground test comes first. You will have to ride a bike or an auto-rickshaw along with the previously bordered “Figure of Eight” without touching the poles planted at different corners. The examiner will test the comfortability of driving and will also check other skills like shifting gears, reversing, bending corners etc. The ride along the “figure of eight” has to be done without touching your feet to the ground. After clearing this, you will be sent for the road test where you have to ride for a certain distance  complying with all the rules and regulations.

The Inspector of the Motor Vehicles will test the capability to drive in accordance with the guidelines listed under the Rule 15 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules 1989. If the officer is happy with the results then he will convey his approval to the RTO and soon you will get your License to drive at any place in India.

Driving License Renewal In Delhi

The Driving License can be renewed once after its expired from its validity date, which is 20 years after the issuance or when you are at the age of 50. First you have to visit the nearest RTO Zonal Office and start the procedure.

Documents That Are Required For The Renewal of the Driving License In Delhi

  • For a Private License, you have to Fill in the Form No. 9 and pay a fee of Rs 250 and applicable penalties .
  • Two latest passport size photographs and the original driving license that got expired.
  • Age proof (Birth Certificate, Voter ID, Aadhaar Card, Passport, PAN Card etc)
  • Current Residence Proof (Utility Bill, Rental/Lease Agreement, Ration Card, Passport etc)
  • Form No. 1 which self-declaration of physical fitness.

For Commercial License, all the documents are required for the Private Renewal of License is required. Apart from those, the other documents that are required are the medical certificate in the Form 1A is mandatory if you are applying in Commercial category. You also need to submit a driving training certificate.

If you have submitted incomplete information or if your data record is incomplete then your verification of the documents can be delayed. But for the commercial license, the details have to be validated from the issuing authority. The issuance of the renewal license is done on the same day for the private vehicles bu not for the commercial vehicles. The duplicate document copies submitted must be attested by the Notary Public or the Gazetted Officer.

To get a Duplicate Driving License you will have to get in touch with the issuing authority and the details are tallied and confirmed from the records. The duplicate license will be valid for the same period of time. This has to be done from the same RTO, which has issued your license before. If your license is lost or is expired or is six months old then you have need to have an authorization from the Head Quarter of the Transport Department.

Documents Required For Duplicate Driving License

  • Application in Form LLD or NCR of your lost/stolen license
  • Challan Clearance report from Traffic Police. (if it is a commercial driving license)
  • A fee of Rs 200
  • Form No. 1 (which is a self-declaration form of Physical Fitness)
  • Residence Proof
  • All the documents must be attested by the Notary Public or the Gazetted Officer.

The International Driving License is distributed at different RTO zonal offices, which is valid for 1 months. The documents that are required for International Driving License are

  • Attested copy of your valid driving license card issued
  • Five Passport Sized photos
  • Medical Form 1A
  • Attested copy of valid residence proof
  • Attested copy of valid passport
  • Attested copy of valid Visa
  • Valid proof of Indian Nationals
  • A nominal fee of Rs 500

Note: The driving license will be given from 8:30 am in the morning to 1:00 pm afternoon.
