Aadhaar refers to a 12 digit unique number provided by the Unique Identification Authority of India to every citizen in India. The Aadhaar scheme is a part of government initiative to provide single identification number from the citizens of India. This number will comprise of the demographic as well as the biometrc details of people. It has been observed that many people do not have a government backed identification which in turn does allow them get included in the financial economy of the country.
Further, the government has made Aadhaar mandatory to link Aadhaar with the bank accounts and also to avail any benefits of government or government backed schemes. This decision of the government has allowed people from diverse section of the society irrespective of caste, class, religion and gender to become a part of the larger economy and development. In recent report by the second economic survey of 2017 it has been observed that the number of women account holders have increased from 28% in 2014 to 40% in 2017. Finance minister Mr. Arun Jaitley stated that approximately 2 billion Aadhaar cards are all set to 2 billion bank accounts.
Infact the government has asked all the banks to announce to all its customers about its new mandate and consequences if the order is not followed.

How to Link Aadhaar With Canara Bank Account
The Canara bank allows its account holders to link their Aadhaar with bank account via 2 methods,that is, either using the online portal or the offline process. The documents that are required for linking the Aadhaar with the account holder are:
- A xerox copy and the original Aadhaar card
- A xerox copy and the original bank passbook
The steps that must be followed in the both methods of linking are provided below
- Offline method: The offline method requires the account holder to visit the bank branch. After this the following steps must be taken to ensure Aadhaar-bank account linking:
- Fill the Application form to link Aadhaar with the bank account available at all bank branch. All the details must be correctly filled.
- After filling the form it must be submitted to the branch office.
- The bank might ask for the documents for verification. After the verification is completed the bank will hand over the documents to the account holder.
- Once the verification is completed the account will be linked with Aadhaar manually by the bank officers
- After the linking process is done a confirmation mail or SMS will be sent to the account holder.
- Online method: In order to link Aadhaar using the online portal an account holder will first have to register himself or herself in the online portal.The following steps must be taken in order to link Aadhaar with the bank account via the online portal:
- Visit the official website of Canara Bank(www.canarabank.in) and then log in using the username and password
- Now, you are required to provide the 13 digit Account number and customer id available in the passbook.
- A one time password will be sent to your registered mobile number.The account holder is required to provide this OTP and click on “submit”.
- A confirmation mail or SMS will be sent to the account holder once the Aadhaar is successfully linked with the account.
- If the account is not linked, then click on the “Aadhaar” link and provide the 12 digit Aadhaar number and then click on “submit”.
