UIDAI Start Aadhaar App With Dynamic OTP Based Verification

Few months back UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) launched the Aadhaar mobile application i.e m – Aadhaar. It is a mobile application on your smart phone which helps you carrying your Aadhaar information such as name, address, DOB, photograph which are linked with your unique Aadhaar Card on your phone and negates the need to carry it on your wallet.

Just after months of its launch, the application hits 1 million downloads. To make the application even more convenient to people, UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has introduced Time Based One Time Password (TOTP) as a new feature to fast track authentication.

Earlier in the application, the users didn’t have the option to enter the OTP manually. However with the introduction to TOTP, the users would not have to wait for OTP to arrive on their mobile since a dynamic OTP will be always available on m – Aadhaar App on their mobile phones.

This would make the process easier in a place which has network issues in their area.

After the introduction of the new feature Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO, UIDAI stated that

to improve both security and convenience, TOTP has been configured in the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP) and e – Aadhaar download and in future, all OTP based Aadhaar authentication applications will be migrated to TOTP based Aadhaar authentication

Pandya further said that

It is an 8 digit long numeric string generated as one-time temporary password (OTP) by an algorithm and valid only for 30 seconds

This app has other useful features like biometric locking and unlocking system, which is a very helpful feature as it secure biometric authentication by locking biometrics data.

In this application

Once resident enables Biometric Locking system their biometric remains locked till the Aadhaar Holder chose to either Unlock it (which is temporary) or Disable the Locking system

To download the application go to Google Play Store on your Android smart phones and type ‘m – Aadhaar‘ in the search option. Download and install the app.

Also note that this application is available only for the android users. Iphone users have to wait for this facility.

m – Aadhaar has become an important application as it is considered to be a valid proof of identity for travellers in Indian Railways.

m – Aadhaar to be a valid ID proof for travellers in Indian Railways

On 13th September, Ministry of Railways decided to consider m – Aadhaar (Aadhaar card on the mobile app) as a proof of identity for the travelers in any reserved class.

m – Aadhaar which is a mobile – based interface has been launched as a push towards the ‘Digital India’ initiative.  The app has been launched by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) which carries demographic information like name, date of birth, gender, and address along with user’s photograph and is linked with one’s Aadhaar number. The app is currently available only for the Android users.

During the journey, passengers are required to open the app and enter his / her password.

m – Aadhaar, when shown by the passenger on his/her mobile after entering the password, should be accepted as a proof of identity for undertaking journey in any reserved class over Indian Railways

the ministry said in a statement.

At one hand where Aadhaar card playing an important role towards a digitalized India, on the other hand, this 12 digit biometric card issued by the Government is going through many controversies as it has been mandated for Indians to access many crucial Government services and benefits.

This flagship program has been also questioned with violation of privacy for the orders of linking Aadhaar with PAN Card, Bank Account and SIM card, which will enable Government to know all about its Citizens and track them.

A petition was also filed in the court against the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar project primarily against the biometric details of a person which when fall into wrong hands can be an invasion of privacy.

The case was transferred to a 9 Judge Constitutional bench which heard only on “Whether Privacy is a Fundamental Right Guaranteed by Article 21 of Constitution of India. “To which Supreme Court gave his historic judgment and declared the right to privacy is indeed a fundamental right.

Right to Privacy is an integral part of Right to Life and Personal Liberty Guaranteed in Article 21 of the Constitution

The Constitutional Bench, headed by then Chief Justice JS Khekar, also constituted a five Judge Bench to listen to the question of “Whether Aadhaar as a government scheme violates the newly adjudged Right to Privacy of Indian Citizens” The next hearing of this case will be held during November 2017.
