Protecting Aadhaar Data using UIDAI Official Website

A billion Indian identities and their privacy is currently at stake as the top court is still considering whether privacy is a fundamental right of every citizen of the country. Anyhow, someone who wants to secure at least the details of their Aadhaar data can do so by following the steps below:

Bio-metric Locking/Unlocking

To secure the bio-metric data connected with 12 digit Aadhaar identification number, visit the official website of https://uidai.gov.in/ . The website allows the user to lock and unlock the usage of bio-metric data temporarily. The locking system has been introduced to ensure the prevention of the misuse of the bio-metric data.

  1. Under the Aadhaar Services Section, click on the lock / unlock option which will redirect to another page. You can also directly go to this link https://resident.uidai.gov.in/biometric-lock
  2. Enter the Aadhaar Number to avail the Biometric Lock System
  3. Enter the Aadhaar details and prove you are a human by inserting the security code. And then a One Time Password (OTP) will be sent on the registered mobile number.
  4. Fill the OTP, in the space provided to complete the verification.
    After that you will see the status of the bio-metric authentication option it is disabled. Then you will be given a security code, by inserting the code, one can lock their bio-metric details (finger prints, iris).

Disable Bio-metric lock in UIDAI Official Website

To disable the locked bio-metric authentication, login using the Aadhaar number and repeat the procedure. The only difference will be instead of locking, click on the unlock option. And after unlocking, one can again use their bio-metric details for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, the details will automatically lock again.

According to UIDAI, if after locking the details, someone tries to violate the authentication procedure by using the bio-metric details (finger prints and iris), an error code ‘330’ would occur, which indicates that bio-metrics are locked.
