Linking Aadhaar and PAN is a must: Hasmukh Aadhia

Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said today that PAN cards not linked with Aadhaar within stipulated time will be canceled and also there will be no extension of the deadline to file the income tax returns which is on 31st July (The deadline has been extended Till 5th Aug by the evening). Hence, the tax payers were urged to adhere the norms and timely completion of the procedure.

The government has once again extended the deadline for the same by March 31st 2017 for individuals yet to complete the linkage task.

The mandation of linkage of the biometric code with Permanent Account Number (PAN) for Filing Income Tax Returns was proposed in the Finance Bill for 2017-18 by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Following this, the apex court pronounced its order on the linkage, which sided with the Government and ask the public to link their Pan Cards to Aadhaar Numbers.

The income tax department also stepped up to encourage people to adhere the norms of filing tax returns. The IT Departments sent alerts to the citizens about the Aadhaar and PAN link which has been mandated for filing returns. The order by the supreme court also brought Aadhaar into lime light as it was questioned with a violation of privacy. A petition was filed in the court against the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar project primarily against the biometric details of a person which when fall into wrong hands will be an invasion of privacy.
