Hurdles in last minute Aadhaar Registrations

The Income Tax Act provision which is linkage of Aadhaar with PAN for filing returns has been validated by the Government. Now it is mandatory for the taxpayers to link their Aadhaar numbers with Permanent Account Number (PAN). For those who are yet to own a PAN card and applying for the same will also have to link the two documents at the time of applying.

IT departments are constantly updating citizens about the linkage which has been mandated for filing returns. The deadline for the filing return is on 31st July. Hence the procedure for linking Aadhaar with PAN is still open.

The Central government’s Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) department has passed on the responsibility for new Aadhaar cards to the State Government. And States outsource the same to the private firms.

Citizens those who are yet to own Aadhaar cardsare rushing to the Aadhaar Centres to enrol for new registration. But this last minute rush is causing chaos to the people as in some places the server is down and the Aadhaar centres are shut and in few centres the systems were under repair, some centres are even coming up with issues like technical glitches andsome centres are handing out only 30 cards in a day. The registration of the Aadhaar before 31st July as it is mandated to link the same with the PAN card for filing income tax returns seems difficult keeping the scenario in mind.

To which an UIDAI official at the central office says …

it is unfortunate that people are waking up now given that Aadhar was started in 2010. Even if they do not manage to enrol by July 31, they can still file income tax returns manually and despatch the document by post to Bengaluru.

The partial reason behind the rush is that it is mandatory to link Aadhaar with Bank account, which is indeed the case where Government has mandated Aadhaar for opening bank accounts. And the existing bank accounts also have to be linked with the same. But the due date for that is end of the year which is December 31st. After that all the bank accounts shall be declared as invalid. Also any high valued transaction worth Rs. 50,000 or above will now require Aadhaar number.

But, this is not it. The Government has also directed the telecom industry to re-verify all phone numbers with Aadhaar number. If any phone number is not re-verified and linked to Aadhaar it will be deactivated by February 2018.
