Do Not Link Aadhaar via SMS: LIC

Life Insurance Corporation or commonly known as LIC has notified its policy holders not to link their 12 digit biometric Aadhaar with policies via SMS service as this facility is still not available officially and it may lead to fraudulent activities.

In the notification, LIC stated that

Our attention is drawn to some messages circulated in social media with our emblem and logo asking policy holders link their Aadhaar number by sending SMS to designated number.

No such messages have been sent by LIC. Also no facility to link Aadhaar number to policies is available through SMS in LIC.

Adding to this it also says,

As and when LIC will enable linking of Aadhaar number with policies through SMS, our website will be duly updated of this option.

As we all know that Aadhaar has become one of the most important documents as it has been mandated with most of the other important official documents such as bank account, PAN (Permanent Account Number), mobile phone and now it is mandatory to link it with Insurance Policy products such as life insurance, health insurance, or any other type of insurance.

Earlier this month, Insurance Regulator IRDA said

Central Government vide gazette notification dated 1st June 2017 notified the Prevention of Money -laundering (Maintenance of Records) Second Amendment Rules, 2017 making Aaadhar and PAN / Form 60 mandatory for availing financial services including insurance and also for linking the existing policies with the same.

According to sources, there are nearly 29 crore policy holders of LIC Insurance Plans. At present, there are total of 54 insurance companies in India. The fraudsters take advantage of this huge number by trying to trick policy holders by creating fake messages with LIC emblem, asking the readers to send their Aadhaar numbers to a given mobile number. Hence, Life Insurance Corporation has issued a strict warning alert against such messages.
