How To Complete Your KYC and Link Aadhaar With Mobile Wallets

Aadhaar linkage deadlines are near and deadline for submitting KYC (Know Your Customer) details to PPIs (Prepaid Payment Instrument) such as Paytm, MobiKwik, etc was on 28th Feb 2018. The initial deadline for the wallets was December 31st, 2017, which was later extended to February 28, 2018.

The RBI (Reserve Bank of India) refused to extend the deadline any further and says

…sufficient time has already been given to meet the prescribed guidelines.

However, assurance has been given by the authority that if someone fails to meet the given deadline, they would not lose money in their mobile wallets

PPI (Pre – Paid Instrument) issuers not obtaining the KYC related inputs of their customers within the timeline, the customer will not lose their money
said B.P Kanungo, Deputy Governor of RBI.
Reloading of the PPI and remittances can resume after completing the KYC requirement.

He further added that

They (Customers) can continue to undertake transactions for purchase of goods and services as thereto to the extent of available balance in the PPI.

How to reactivate e – wallet

Once the customer provide their Aadhaar details which is a part of KYC (Know Your Customer) process, they can enjoy full services of their mobile wallets.

The process for most e – wallets is almost the same: you open the app and type your registered mobile number and you will receive a One Time Password (OTP) on your registered mobile number and put the OTP and you will be able to upload your Aadhaar details.

In case of Paytm, people can either visit a nearest Paytm KYC centre or schedule a visit from a Paytm representative after uploading Aadhaar details on the app.

However, PPIs apparently find the KYC requirement a challenging job as they fear business loss if stricter guidelines are implemented with majority customers sticking to minimum KYC.

UIDAI Start Aadhaar App With Dynamic OTP Based Verification

Few months back UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) launched the Aadhaar mobile application i.e m – Aadhaar. It is a mobile application on your smart phone which helps you carrying your Aadhaar information such as name, address, DOB, photograph which are linked with your unique Aadhaar Card on your phone and negates the need to carry it on your wallet.

Just after months of its launch, the application hits 1 million downloads. To make the application even more convenient to people, UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India) has introduced Time Based One Time Password (TOTP) as a new feature to fast track authentication.

Earlier in the application, the users didn’t have the option to enter the OTP manually. However with the introduction to TOTP, the users would not have to wait for OTP to arrive on their mobile since a dynamic OTP will be always available on m – Aadhaar App on their mobile phones.

This would make the process easier in a place which has network issues in their area.

After the introduction of the new feature Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO, UIDAI stated that

to improve both security and convenience, TOTP has been configured in the Self Service Update Portal (SSUP) and e – Aadhaar download and in future, all OTP based Aadhaar authentication applications will be migrated to TOTP based Aadhaar authentication

Pandya further said that

It is an 8 digit long numeric string generated as one-time temporary password (OTP) by an algorithm and valid only for 30 seconds

This app has other useful features like biometric locking and unlocking system, which is a very helpful feature as it secure biometric authentication by locking biometrics data.

In this application

Once resident enables Biometric Locking system their biometric remains locked till the Aadhaar Holder chose to either Unlock it (which is temporary) or Disable the Locking system

To download the application go to Google Play Store on your Android smart phones and type ‘m – Aadhaar‘ in the search option. Download and install the app.

Also note that this application is available only for the android users. Iphone users have to wait for this facility.

m – Aadhaar has become an important application as it is considered to be a valid proof of identity for travellers in Indian Railways.

Now Pay using just Aadhaar Number – UPI Phase 2 is live

The second version of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is out now. Rumors are out saying that some parts of the UPI Version 2 are live because the users of Samsung Pay, Bharat Interface for Money (BHIM), and HDFC Bank’s mobile app can now make the UPI Payments linking to the Aadhaar Numbers. It was reported that the second version of UPI was about to come live in March 2017, and a blue print was released explaining the details of linking an Aadhaar with the financial addresses of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) list.

The latest update given by the Samsung Pay states that the users can now make the payments and transactions using just the Aadhaar Number. BHIM users are also saying that you can also use Aadhaar to pay. The HDFC app has now the features showing the availability of the Aadhaar option as well.

Note that, when HDFC first launched the UPI feature in their mobile banking app in November 2016, the option of sending money using the Aadhaar mode was inactive and was out of action. Even the option of making transactions using Aadhaar number feature was mothballed in the UPI apps as well such as PhonePe and Chillr. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based app will also have the features of biometric based Aadhaar Pay option as well, but this feature has been kept low key and is yet to roll out.

According, to the UIDAI, more than 90% of India’s population has their Aadhaar registered and more than 390 million bank accounts are linked with the Aadhaar details and the Aadhaar number. So, adding the Aadhaar number option in the banking app feature will make the payments and transactions of the User more convenient and simple as ABC.

There are other three payment modes which are linked to Aadhaar.

Aadhaar-Enabled Payment System (AEPS) which is developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This allows various features such as cash withdrawal, deposits and funds transfer at POS (Micro ATM) using the Aadhaar authentication.

The second is the Aadhaar Pay. This was launched in January by the Indian Government. This mode of payment uses the Aadhaar number and the payment is done through the user’s fingerprint.

Last but not the least, is the Aadhaar Payments Bridge System (APBS), this payment mode is responsible for the direct benefit transfer of subsidies by the Government. These Subsidies are transferred to the bank accounts that are linked to Aadhaar.

It is observed that the Aadhaar failure rates are massive. According to the report on digital payments by the Watal Committee, the graph of failure rates in AEPS transactions are found to be around 60%. The technology has geared up and is continuously making advances in the UPI and Aadhaar-bank account linkage, as it is necessary for the bank portability.

So, the RBI Deputy Governor SS Mundra ends up putting up a statement saying

The Prospect of an aggrieved customer silently moving her account to another bank in the near future has become very real
